2021.10.23 17:27 CryoJester Usefulness of Automatron robots in settlements?
I'm looking to start a long term playthrough, high cha/int character working with the Minutemen to unify the Commonwealth; lots of settlement building, farming, production, etc. Part of that plan is to make use of Automatron robots in quite a few of my settlements. It works with the high intelligence and they don't need food or water. Looking into the robots though there's some issues that make me unsure just how well they'll actually work out in the long run, so I wanted to ask here what others opinions on the matter is, and for any advice on making it better if applicable.
To start, if I'm understanding correctly; unlike regular settlers, Automatron robots aren't protected from death unless they're set as your follower, so if a settlement gets raided they could be destroyed and the settlements production would be hindered. I could re-make the robots whenever this happens but that could get quite irritating if it happens too often I think, and keeping track of what needs a robot reassigned to it if one dies would be a nightmare.
I know that through console commands the robots can be set as essential to negate this issue, but I'd like to know how applicable their use would be without making use of that.
On top of that, I think I read somewhere that if a robot companion you make sees a robot you didn't make/isn't allied to you, it will spark hostility with the group the other robot is a part of. How much of a problem is this overall? Would this just be a matter of not building robots in specific areas, and if so which areas? Or would I not really have to worry about that conflict? Also, a specific question regarding this; do the automatron robots react negatively to the Mr. Handy robots in Greygarden?
Finally, what other information regarding the robot companions have I not listed here that would be useful to know before/if I start trying to make use of them? Anything important to know about effectively making the most of them in my settlements, or other bugs/issues that could come up through their use.
TLDR: Is it worth it to make use of the robot companions you can build from the Automatron DLC in settlements, or should I just use human settlers?

2021.10.23 17:27 AlamosBasement "The responsible one"
In Mississippi this weekend for my brother-in-law's wedding, and the bride-to-be was stressing about who should hold on to the couple's wedding rings. Someone from the group says, "Just give it to AlamosBasement, he's the only responsible person here." I was shocked as the bride seemed relieved as she gave me the wedding bands to hold on to. This would never have been the case 5 years ago, not drunk me; especiallya wedding. Hell, I'd be the last person put in charge with even the garbage removal. But sober me, yer rings be safe with me Master Frodo. IWNDWYT friends! Anyone need something important held on to, I'm your guy! Everyone struggling right now, it does get better. Sober life has made me proud of myself again. I'M THOUGHT AS RESPONSIBLE!

2021.10.23 17:27 lonestargogo Theories about Catholicism & marriage, as they pertain to the Baldwins
I've been thinking about this with the recent events this week, but they're not really directly related. They pertain to the Baldwin's story as a whole as we've been watching through this lens for the past 10 months. I'm not really relating them to each other, other than the evidence we've seen or have been looking for surrounding the tragedy. I'm going to leave alone any connection between Catholicism and marriage because that's a bit of a hornet's nest 😊.
I'm just combining these two theories into a single post because they all tie together with everything we've seen all year.
Catholicism & guilt:
This one is broken into 3 parts:
Opinion: I believe that Alec truly feels guilt in his heart over the events of this week. I can't speculate on the level of guilt or whether it's enough or too little, but I'm fairly confident he's not 100% selfish and soulless on the matter, despite such public performances we've seen in the past.
Rationale: Alec was raised Catholic. So was I. Any Catholic will tell you how strong guilt is embedded throughout your life and family, well outside of church or active participation in the religion. It's hard to deprogram yourself from feeling guilty about everything, even when trying as hard as you can being very aware. Small parts if it stay with you forever. I can personally vehemently attest to this. I think Alec must have a residual sliver of conscience left in the form of guilt.
Theory: Alec may have responded to the excessive guilt of Catholicism by swinging his pendulum far in the other direction as an adult by taking an aggressive "unapologetic" stance about everything. This is very much in the range of normal human responses to excessive or imbalanced childhood environments. I'll spare giving specific other examples of these because we've seen this in so many other scenarios. Whether it's conscious or not, it's very often not, this is a plausible explanation for why he is the way he is and could shed light on how he's feeling this week.
This one is in 2 parts:
Observations: The many, many monologues we've seen from both of them pouring their hearts out (performing or otherwise; Alec's had a couple moments of authenticity and lucidity, IMO, just a few), who are they talking to and why? When I saw his video before the incident about his frustrations with his industry, it dawned on me that this is a conversation I would have with my husband or closest friends, in excruciating detail and with strong emotions. I've had many of these, mostly with my romantic partner. Same thing with Hillary, who does the same, and we all know and frequently observe that she has no friends and seems isolated from her family. So where does she go to vent & pour her heart out? The same place Alec does: to anyone & everyone out there. We have no idea if they do this with each other of course, but the constant FaceTime screenshots aren't convincing whatsoever. I know there are other reasons we've discussed ad nauseum, but I'm focusing on this one that I sort of missed.
Theory: The reason they do this is in part because their marriage is failing, whether it's because it's a contract sham marriage or just one where two people no longer can communicate openly. Too many people who've been through rough spells in marriage will deeply understand this. I do think they're doing it for other more nefarious reasons as well, but it's a sign to me that a marriage is doomed when two people in the couple are having intimate emotional conversations with so many other people when they need support. It's not exactly a revelation that their marriage is broken, just more evidence. I didn't see it that way until this week when I sat through his very convincing vent about the clusterfuck of his work and thought, "this is a conversation you should be having with your wife and she's incapable of listening to it in any helpful way." Ditto for her for him.
